Polonnaruwa is probably the best preserved ancient city of Sri Lanka. Once a medieval capital, this amazing citadel has the best archeological relics and boasts of a vibrant yet tumultuous history. The city flourished at its zenith during the time of King Parakramabahu the 1st (1153 – 1186 AD). The ruins of the ancient city stand on the east shore of a large artificiallake, the Topa Wewa or Prakrama Samudraya – built by the revered king. Within a rectangle ofcity walls stand the ruins of palaces, dagobas, temples and various other historical monuments. The GalViharaya with its enormous rock sculptures is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements of Sinhalese art. Polonnaruwa is definitely a must-visit place on any Sri Lankan tour itinerary.
